Manchester City’s ability to take legal action against Uefa in the event of the club being banned from the Champions League may be limited by a memorandum of understanding agreed with the European football’s governing body in February. The document – negotiated and signed by the European Club Association of which City is a prominent member – commits ECA clubs to “the explicit exclusion of [using] any State court” to challenge the enforcement of Financial Fair Play regulations.

Uefa’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) last month referred City to its adjudicatory chamber following an investigation into the Abu Dhabi-owned club’s breaches of FFP rules.
